Lineage is an ongoing series which uses found photographs as the starting point to personally reflect on ideas of women's heritage, and the roles ascribed to them. This material provides the stimulus to create original work in a call and response manner as well as being directly integrated into it via diptychs and as stand alone images.
The series considers how the context of a photo can describe an era, and begins a compare and contrast process to see what has changed and what remains inherently the same. More broadly, it takes into account the collective memory, that being the shared or common values of previous societies and institutions, which are passed down through the generations in verbal and non verbal ways. Whilst much has changed for women in many countries over the past hundred years or so, Lineage explores to what extent inherited visual cues and stories are carried forward in the psyche. -
